Kids, WhatsApp & Risk: What Parents Should Do

Smartphones and apps like WhatsApp are part of everyday life for children—but they can quickly expose them to situations they are not ready to handle.

This is not just a parenting issue. Under Spanish law, parents have a duty to supervise their children, including their digital activity. Failing to act early can lead to real risks, from inappropriate conversations to contact with strangers.

Act Early, Act Together

If both parents are involved, a unified approach is key. Mixed messages weaken boundaries; consistency reinforces them.

Don’t Just Ban—Manage

Removing WhatsApp is not always the answer.

Minor issue → supervise, set rules, monitor

Serious concern → restrict or remove the app temporarily

The goal is protection, not punishment.

Have a Clear Conversation

Children need to understand limits:

“Some things online can lead to serious problems, even if you don’t realise it.”

Keep it calm, firm, and focused on safety.

Set Boundaries

No talking to strangers

No sharing photos or personal data

Regular supervision by parents

This is legally justified under parental responsibility.

When to Escalate

Seek advice if there is:

Contact with adults

Sexual or inappropriate content

Pressure, threats, or manipulation

Bottom Line

This is about guidance and prevention.

The earlier parents act, the safer their children will be.
